Foundational to preventative dentistry is the regular “check-up.” We schedule these visits two times per year. A blend of exams and professional cleaning check-ups may be required more often for individuals who use tobacco or nicotine products and have other risk factors for gum disease, oral cancer, and other conditions. Here is a quick glimpse into some of what you can expect during these routine appointments:
- Professional cleanings – The “prophy”/prophylaxis is simply the medical terminology for teeth cleaning done by professionals. Our hygienists have the special training and tools to gently yet thoroughly lift stubborn tartar, harmful bacteria, and some stains (depending on the depth of the stain). Tartar (or hardened plaque) cannot be removed with an untrained hand and standard toothbrushes.
- Digital x-rays – This form of radiography is associated with very low radiation exposure and a high degree of accuracy. We enlist these advanced x-rays to help us better assess hard-to-see areas of the mouth. They aid in the accurate and prompt detection and intervention of conditions like aggressive gum disease.
- Oral cancer screenings – Masses, discolored patches, and other anomalies could indicate the presence of a pre-cancerous or malignant lesion. As needed, a bit of the suspicious tissue may be taken as a biopsy for further evaluation. Early detection is associated with successful treatment.
